PAUL ANKA IN CONCERT
Sandi Polacco reviews one of Paul Anka's 1999 appearances in Atlantic City.
As he came in through the audience, he stopped to talk and kiss and sign autographs before opening with Diana. During the evening he performed most of his old numbers. He also paid tribute to Bobby Darin by singing Mack the Knife, saying he always does a Darin song to keep the memory alive. During The Times of Your Life, Paul showed movies of himself as a baby as well as his wife and five daughters, all of whom have names beginning with A. He joked that being the only man in a household of six women meant there was was plenty of PMS - which in his case stood for 'Paul Must Suffer'. At the end of this bracket, he invited the audience to have "a Kodak moment". Many people had cameras, and I wanted to kick myself for forgetting mine. Later, Paul sang along with Sammy Davis Jnr on the big screen, and did the same with Frank Sinatra singing I Did It My Way. It brought the audience to their feet. I couldn't believe how warm and friendly Paul was. He spent so much time in the audience, kissing, posing for pictures and signing autographs. If you get the chance to see Paul perform, go for it. It'll be well worth your while.
